Gluing the new willow block. The ribs were taken apart and reglued, and the old glue removed.
The bass bar was removed, then the patch block prepared, placement laid out, carefully marked, then the patch bed was cut, and finished. This repair should never be done by anyone by an experienced luthier.
The patch is chalk fitted, then glued with hide glue.
Trimming the patch.
Grains must be matched and aligned. Notice the wide grain of the old bar, this was much too wide for a bass bar.
Gluing the tiny wooden pieces of the inlaid mural. The cityscape is made of tiny pieces of colored fruitwood, and hard wood, then painted to accent the shapes. The glue had dried many years ago, and it needed many areas glued.
Starting to fit the new bar, after placement is established by many mathematical proportions, then it is chalk fit, and glued.
Trimming the bass bar, this is done with care and is also referenced with tap tones of the top that allow me to know when to stop. This was taken March 14th 2008. New pictures soon.
